本標準規定了長期保存于圖書館、檔案館及其他環境中文獻的書寫字跡、打印字跡、復印字跡耐久性和耐用性的要求與測試方法。本標準適用于：--文獻紙張上的書寫字跡、打印字跡和復印字跡；--單色字跡和多色字跡。本標準不適用于：--保存在不良環境中的文獻字跡，如：水浸、高溫、高濕及由此而導致的微生物生長、輻射（如光）、嚴重污染等；--法律文件，以真實性為優先考慮因素的字跡，如：銀行文件；--攝影中涉及的照片文件；--因顏色稍有變化便會使信息內容受到影響的文件。多色字跡的信息內容宜被保留，但不必要保留其全部藝術品質。
